“The questions are simple. The reveal is not.”
Who Doesn't Know? is a small gamified quiz experience designed around one simple question: who knows the least? The concept was inspired by the Dutch television show Wie is de Mol?, where a group of contestants tries to identify an undercover imposter who secretly works against them. One of the recurring elements of the show is the quiz at the end of each episode, where contestants answer questions about the identity and behaviour of the Mole. The person who knows the least about the Mole is eliminated. I wanted to take that idea and turn it into a standalone game that could be played by a group of friends.
Project information
The concept
Instead of trying to identify an actual Mole, Who Doesn't Know? focuses entirely on the quiz mechanic. A group creates a quiz about themselves, fills it in individually, and then discovers who performed the worst. The idea is deliberately simple: the more you know about the group, the better you perform. The experience is split into three separate panels, each designed around a different part of the game.
Create
The first panel is used to create the quiz. Here, the quiz host can create the questions that the group will eventually answer. This establishes the knowledge that will be tested and gives the host control over the game.
Answer
Once the quiz is ready, everyone in the group fills in their answers. The goal isn't to compete directly against each other while answering. Everyone answers individually, creating a set of answers that can later be compared with the correct answers. This keeps the experience focused on the final reveal rather than showing scores immediately.
Reveal
The final panel is where the game becomes more dramatic. Once everyone has completed the quiz, the results are revealed one person at a time. The host enters the name of a player from the group, and the system checks their answers. If they pass the quiz, they are shown a green screen. If they fail, the screen turns red. This simple interaction creates the tension I was looking for. Rather than immediately displaying a leaderboard, each person has their own moment of suspense before discovering whether they passed.
Turning a TV mechanic into a game
The main challenge of the project was translating the quiz mechanic from Wie is de Mol? into something that could stand on its own. The original show uses the quiz as part of a much larger mystery, with weeks of clues, deception, and suspicion leading up to the results. Who Doesn't Know? strips that down to its most interesting element: how well do you actually know the people around you? The result is a lightweight game that can be played by any group without needing the larger context of the television show.
